Anyone who bids or works as a contractor in Oregon needs a Construction Contractors Board license with the right endorsement. Bond and insurance minimums rise with the endorsement.

Under ORS 701.021, a person who undertakes, offers to undertake or bids on work as a contractor must hold a current license from the Construction Contractors Board (CCB) and the appropriate endorsement. Each endorsement carries its own bond, insurance and responsible managing individual requirement.

Residential endorsements (ORS 701.081)

  • Residential general contractor: $25,000 bond, $500,000 liability insurance.
  • Residential specialty contractor: $20,000 bond, $300,000 insurance.
  • Residential limited contractor: $15,000 bond, $100,000 insurance.

Commercial endorsements (ORS 701.084)

  • Commercial general contractor level 1: $80,000 bond, $2 million insurance, and key employees with at least eight years' combined experience.
  • Commercial specialty contractor level 1: $55,000 bond, $1 million insurance.

A firm holding both residential and commercial endorsements files a bond for each (ORS 701.068).
